What is Kindle Unlimited?

Kindle Unlimited is a monthly subscription offered by Amazon, that allows users to access over 4 million books, magazines, comics, cookbooks, and more. This is not to be confused with Prime reading, they are two separate things.

Prime reading is a benefit for Prime Members, which allows members access to thousands of books at no additional cost.

Price of Kindle Unlimited:

Kindle Unlimited recently increased the price of the subscription to $11.99. I do think the increase of $2 is significant, however, I still believe the price is worth it. Not everyone has an extra $11.99 to spend on subscriptions that they may not like, so the good news is that you can easily sign up for a free 30-day trial and find out if the price is worth it for you. This is how I first tried Kindle Unlimited, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

What books are available on Kindle Unlimited?

These are some of the pros and cons of KU. Although there are 4 million books, magazines, comics, and audiobooks available, not every book is on there. Most new and popular books will not be included in the subscription. This can be a bummer when you want to read the latest bestseller. However, there are a ton of great choices. For example, the entire Harry Potter series is available on KU right now!

If you are a huge romance novel buff, then Kindle Unlimited might be up your alley, as that is the largest section on Kindle Unlimited. The Fantasy and Sci-fi sections are enormous as well, basically, anything you are interested in is available on Kindle Unlimited. One of my favorite genres right now is Psychological thrillers, and I can always find at least three titles that interest me.  

How long do your books last in your Kindle Unlimited library?

Kindle books last in your library indefinitely. I think I’ve had one book in my library for about ten months now because I keep going back to read certain sections. There is a limit to the amount of books you can borrow at one time, and that is 20! So you can borrow 20 books at a time, with no due dates, but if you’d like to read anything more than 20 books, you will need to return one before you borrow the next one.

Can you share your KU subscription?

Do you need a Kindle to use Kindle Unlimited?

Nope! I only purchased my Kindle Paperwhite last year. Before that, I used the Kindle App on my iPhone. The app is free to download, and you can use the 30 day free trial on the app as well. If you have a Kindle, it’s still a great idea to download the app because you can use them in tandem, meaning you can read all your books in your Kindle library through your phone or your Kindle device. They will automatically sync to one another, and you’ll be able to pick up wherever you left off when you last read. This comes in handy when I’ve forgotten my Kindle, but I have some time to read, I can easily start from my last bookmarked page right on my phone.

Tips for finding your next read

With so many choices, finding content on KU can be overwhelming. Some tips I’ve used to find great books are as follows:

1. Use the filters to narrow down your search. If you’re looking for Romance books, first use the filter for Kindle Unlimited, then use the filter for Romance, from there you can filter down even more! For example, you could filter all the way down to “Fantasy Romance with Alpha Males”, and this will make it much easier to see a narrow search result.
2. If you have no idea what you want to read, then check the Bestseller list, Goodreads Choice, or the Editor’s picks.
3. Use the customer reviews to check star ratings, this is a good way to weed out any poorly written or edited books. If someone is willing to leave a review, they either loved it or hated it and you will have an easier time finding a good book.
4. Use book lists! Tons of blogs (like this one haha!) make reading lists, book lists, and book reviews for Kindle Unlimited. My favorite place to search for lists is Pinterest!

How to get the most out of your Kindle Unlimited subscription

If you truly want to get the most bang for your buck, read, read, read! The more books you read the more money you save. Read at night, on breaks, while waiting in line, etc. There are tons of benefits to reading! There is never a bad time to pick up your book!

If there is a book you want to read, always check the Kindle library first! Amazon is constantly updating and changing Kindle Unlimited and the book you want to read might be on there.

Do not forget that there are TONS of cookbooks on Kindle Unlimited! I have borrowed and read many cookbooks on my Kindle, and some have provided invaluable information and insight into baking techniques and recipes. If you are a baker or enjoy cooking, there are undoubtedly cookbooks on Kindle Unlimited you will appreciate.

Is Kindle Unlimited worth it?

The bottom line, if you read more than three books a month, you can save a ton of money with Kindle Unlimited. The average price of a digital book is $3.99 in the Kindle Store. At three books a month, you are averaging $11.97, so if you’re reading four books a month (or more), you could save about $50.00 a year by using Kindle Unlimited.

While Kindle Unlimited may not provide significant savings for avid readers of current bestsellers, it still offers an extensive collection of millions of books to choose from. This means that readers can discover new and exciting titles, explore different genres, and broaden their knowledge.
