What age are these books suitable for?
These are the perfect books for kids aged 2-4 years old. Both of my children, who are 1 and 4, love every single one of these books, so there is some leeway in that age range. We’ve read each one of these books at least 20 times, some of them much more, and they never get old! Most of these are interactive in some way, which I find helps keep my little ones’ attention more.
How to choose the right book for your toddler
First, consider your child’s age. 2-4-year-olds will appreciate bright colors, familiar events or actions, and simple drawings they can clearly see and understand. Try to choose books that have themes that relate to the world around them, this can help children connect to the story. Once stories hold a child’s attention, they will want to come back to the book again and again!
10 Best Fall books for Toddlers:
- The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything – by Linda D. Williams (Author), Megan Lloyd (Illustrator) -The little old lady comes across some interesting things in the woods, but no matter how hard they try they can’t scare her! My kids love to “shake shake” and “wiggle wiggle” along with the book! It’s my favorite on this list!
- The Leaf Thief – by Alice Hemming (Author), Nicola Slater (Illustrator) – Squirrel loves looking at his brightly covered leaves but becomes very concerned someone might be stealing them when he notices some are missing! There is a very nice explanation at the end of the book about what trees lose leaves in the fall and why.
- The Baddies – by Julia Donaldson (Author), Axel Scheffler (Illustrator)-There are three “baddies”, a witch, a troll, and a ghost. They try to steal a scare a little girl who moves in next door, but she is unbothered by them. I love the illustration of this book; it feels very classic like the books I read as a child.
- Little Blue Truck Halloween – by Alice Schertle (Author), Jill McElmurry (Illustrator)Little Blue Truck is having a Halloween party, and all his animal friends are dressing up! My kids love to pull up the flaps on all the animals to see who’s hiding behind their costumes.
- Room on a Broom – by Julia Donaldson (Author), Axel Scheffler (Illustrator)This is by the same author as The Baddies, and it’s another great story about a witch who meets some helpful animals who want a ride on her broom.
- Don’t Push the Button– by Bill Cotter (Author and illustrator)This is one of the shorter books on the list, but it’s so interactive that both my son and daughter love reading it! A monster goes trick or treating, and there’s only one more spooky house to go to, but he’s afraid there might be ghosts and monsters! When he pushes the button, he gets a surprise!
- Spooky Pookie– by Sandra Boynton (Author, Illustrator)Another shorter book is about Pookie, a little pig who doesn’t know what to be for Halloween. She tries on different costumes and in the end decides on a special one.
- You’re my little Pumpkin Pie – Natalie Marshall (Illustrator)This book is perfect for the lower ages in our range, around 1 or 2, but my son still wants to read it with us! It’s a cute little book about pumpkins and black cats and ghosts! Such an adorable book.
- Biscuit Visits the Pumpkin Patch – by Alyssa Satin Capucilli (Author), Pat Schories (Illustrator)Biscuit books are classic, and this one’s no different! Biscuit goes to the pumpkin patch and does all kinds of fall activities with the little girl.
- Pete the Cat: Trick or Treat- by James Dean (Author, Illustrator), Kimberly Dean (Author)- Pete the Cat and his friends go trick or treating and along the way, his eyes play tricks on him! There are fun pull tabs over all the spooky things Pete thinks he is seeing. My kids love any book that has pull tabs or pop-ups.
Fall is a great time to read with your children! With the weather cooling down, and the nights getting shorter, curling up in front of the fire with a book is a great alternative to screen time.
The benefits of reading aloud to children are undeniable. It helps them learn communication skills, build their vocabulary, and encourage a lifelong love of reading! It is never too early or too late to start reading.
I find reading with my little ones helps us to calm down at night, especially before bedtime. We read throughout the day as well, to take breaks and have some quiet time. I always notice a difference in their moods after we read, and it’s always a positive change.
Any of these books would make a great gift or Halloween treat for a niece, nephew, or little one you know! Books are my favorite thing to bring with me to baby showers as well!
